When planning a vacation in the UAE, it is important to remember about the presence of unusual and often unexpected expenses inherent in this direction. After the usual Turkey and Tunisia for "All Inclusive", it is strange for tourists to pay for something in excess of the paid voucher.
Some newbie travel agents forget to mention / just don't know about these costs. At least this is how I interpret the shock, tears and even tantrums of tourists at the reception upon check-in.
Well, how else to react to the fact that when you check in, you are asked to pay some kind of tax and a deposit in an amount that often reaches half of the money taken with you? In general, we understand what the tax is and when you can not pay deposits at the hotel.
Tourist tax in the UAE
Tourist tax is levied on every foreign guest staying in hotels or apartments in Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In other Emirates, this tax is not yet available. This is a mandatory fee and cannot be waived.
The tax amount depends on a combination of a number of parameters:
- hotel category (number of "stars");
- number of nights stay;
- number of rooms in a room or apartment.
The table shows the actual tax amounts per night for one-room room:
Hotel category | Dubai | Ras Al Khaimah | Abu Dhabi |
Hotels 5 * and higher | 20 AED (5.5 $) | 20 AED (5.5 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) |
Hotels 4 * | 15 AED (4.1 $) | 15 AED (4.1 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) |
Hotels 3 * | 10 AED (2.7 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) |
Hotels 2 * | 11 AED (2.7 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) |
Hotels 1 * | 7 AED (1.9 $) | 7 AED (1.9 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) |
Deluxe Apartment | 20 AED (5.5 $) | 15 AED (4.1 $) | - |
Superior Apartment | 15 AED (4.1 $) | 15 AED (4.1 $) | - |
Standard Apartment | 10 AED (2.7 $) | 10 AED (2.7 $) | - |
Please note that the total tax amount depends not only on the star rating, but also on the number of bedrooms! That is why I have listed prices with an emphasis on one room!
That is, if you are traveling to Dubai for a week and have booked a 5 * room with two rooms at the hotel, you will pay: 20AED x 2 bedrooms x 7 nights = 280 AED. At the same time, the number of people in the room does not affect the amount of tax.
The tax is payable upon arrival or departure from the hotel / apartment in cash or by credit card, if this method of payment is provided at the hotel.
For refusal to pay, hotel staff have every right to call the tourist police, as well as write off this money from a bank card, if the tourist made a deposit for accommodation with it. In general, be careful and add this waste to your travel budget while still at home.
Deposits at hotels in the UAE
The deposit is a kind of "insurance" of the hotel against possible damage that residents may cause during their vacation. Its purpose is to compensate for damaged furniture, lost towels, etc., as well as for the convenience of payment by the guest for hotel services.
With a paid deposit, the guest does not have to constantly walk with a wallet to pay for a cup of coffee in a restaurant or a massage in a spa. The cost of the service provided will simply be written down in his name and written off from the deposit upon check-out. Conveniently!
It is accepted to make deposits in hotels of 4 * and 5 * categories, however, it may be required in 3 * hotels. The amount of the deposit depends on the hotel category and is calculated in two versions:
- amount per room per day;
- amount for the entire period of stay.
For example, a deposit at a 5 * hotel in Dubai Al Qasr - Madinat Jumeirah 5 * will cost $ 140 per night, and in Tamani Hotel 4 * apartments - $ 410 per week. In fact, these numbers are always indicative. Often at the reception they say the amounts are lower, but you need to be prepared to pay the "official cost".
If you pay the deposit in cash in dollars, it will be returned on the day of check-out in Dirhams at the hotel's rate on the day of check-out! This is inconvenient - there is nowhere to spend them before departure. At the airport you can exchange them back to USD.
You can also make a deposit by credit card. In such cases, I always recommend having a credit card with you. "MAESTRO", "VISA", "MASTERCARD" are accepted. The required amount will be blocked until eviction. If the deposit is not spent on hotel services, the full amount will be returned within a month after the check-out.

Is it possible not to pay the deposit?
Unlike the tourist tax, you can try to refuse to pay the deposit. In some hotels, the guest is even given a choice: to pay or not.
If the tourist does not want to pay the deposit, then it is fully transferred to cash at the time of providing the service, and on departure. At the same time, the minibar is sealed, external telephone communication and pay TV channels are blocked.
In inexpensive hotels in Sharjah, instead of money, you can give a foreign passport as a deposit. I cannot answer how safe it is. There were no precedents, but still.
Set aside the money required for taxes and deposits before traveling to the Emirates. Tax is required to be paid. It is not worth expecting that the amount of the deposit will be reduced or, in general, removed. It is better to prepare in advance than to worry about it later.

What is "hotel tax" in Dubai?
This is one of the two main tourist taxes in Dubai. Hotel tax is a payment charged by a hotel for its services. Hotel tax in Dubai includes a 10 percent city tax. This tourist tax is usually included in your bill. Hotel tax is levied on every guest staying in a hotel, hotel room or apartment. Its cost varies from 7 to 20 dirhams and is determined by the type of hotel and its rating. You will have to pay AED 7 for a mini-hotel and AED 20 for a 5-star hotel. Please note that this Dubai Tourist Tax is charged per night of your stay.
What is "departure tax" in Dubai?
Dubai Departure Tax is one of the two main tourist taxes in Dubai. It is charged when you buy a plane ticket that either lands or takes off at one of the airports in Dubai. Dubai departure tax is included in the ticket price, no matter where you buy it. Several categories of people are exempt from this tourist tax in Dubai. These are children under two years old, transit passengers and crew members.
Tourist taxes in Dubai - withdrawal
The UAE government has introduced both tourism taxes in Dubai to raise funds to further develop the tourism industry. The government plans to invest them in order to improve the services provided and expand the infrastructure. Thus, the Dubai tourism tax is helping to transform Dubai into a superior resort. Since both tourist taxes in Dubai are included in the price of the services provided, they will go unnoticed by the traveler. In the meantime, you can enjoy adventure and fun in Dubai. Traveling to Dubai will be the best pastime of your life.
In this article, we will talk about taxes and fees for tourists in the UAE. Usually, in this case, it means those amounts that tourists are forced to pay in hotels on top of the declared cost of living, or fees for entering, leaving or staying in the country. There are several types of similar tourist fees in the UAE. Let's consider all of them.
Good news
No money is taken on entry or exit from Russian tourists to the UAE. There is not even a visa fee now, Russian tourists are simply stamped at the border, as we wrote about in the article "".
Bad news
There are hotel taxes. Each emirate has its own set. The main negative is that when declaring prices for accommodation in hotels in the UAE, these fees almost never include.
For instance. You have calculated your budget for a vacation in the UAE and concluded that you can pay $ 60 for a hotel room. You go to booking.com or another search engine, find a suitable hotel for $ 60. But as a result, you have to pay not 60, but 78 dollars. Agree, this is extremely unpleasant. To be ready for such moments, read our article to the end.
Additional taxes for tourists in the UAE:
2. Special tax "tourist dirham", does not exist in all emirates, the rate depends on the stars at the hotel;
3. The "service charge" surcharge, actually a federal tax of 10%;
4. Council tax, levied in favor of the local budget, differs in different emirates.
If you are going on vacation on a voucher (package tour)
The situation for estimating the cost of a vacation is simplified a little. For most tour operators, all taxes and fees at the hotel are included in the price of the tour. Most, but not all. Therefore, before buying a tour, you should ask a travel agent a simple question: what other additional payments are waiting at the hotel? Depending on the answer, you will calculate the real cost of the tour.
If at first glance we compare the cost of vacations in the UAE by vouchers and independently, then vouchers seem to be much more expensive. However, if you take into account all these hotel surcharges, then the prices will be approximately equal.
- Check the information about your flight on the information board and go to the check-in counters, the numbers of which are indicated on the board. Present your passport and ticket when registering.

Passengers of international flights go through customs, passport control, as well as security control, after which they await flight departure in the sterile area of the gallery of international airlines. When passing the controls, a passport and a boarding pass are presented.
When transporting animals or plants, it is necessary to pass phytocontrol / veterinary control.
