How long is a passport valid?

Before crossing the border, you need to check the validity of your passport - it should not be expired upon returning home. How long is the document valid?

What kind of document is this?

A foreign passport is an official document required for traveling outside one’s home country and entering foreign countries. Issued for a specific period. Until it ends, the document is valid.

The main law regulating the validity period of a foreign passport is Federal Law No. 114 “On the procedure for leaving the Russian Federation,” adopted on August 15, 1996. In accordance with the law, the validity period of a document depends on its type - a foreign passport of a new or outdated format.

How long is a passport valid?

The validity period of a foreign document is affected by the type of passport - old or new sample. In the first case, the document is valid for 5 years, in the second – 10 years.

There are other reasons why a passport is considered invalid:

  • there are no more empty pages to fill in with information;
  • the document has become unusable - it is torn, there are stains on it, etc.;
  • presence of extraneous records.

If the embassy refuses to issue a document for these reasons. You must apply for a new passport. The expiration date is indicated below the passport issue date.

The embassies of some countries put forward requirements that there should be from six months to 1 year left until the end of the period.

This period must be found out on the Embassy’s website. At the same time, it is important to compare it with your plans - you need to calculate it in such a way that the required period remains not before departure, but after returning home. This should be taken seriously - for this reason, entry into the country is often denied.

There is no procedure for exchanging a foreign document - you will have to issue a passport and get a new one. While a new foreign passport is being issued, the old one remains with its owner - you can still travel with it. It will be canceled the moment you receive a new passport.

How to find out the deadline?

To check the validity period of a foreign document, you need to look at the first page of your passport. At the bottom there will be 2 lines with dates - one of them is the date of issue, the second is the expiration date.

What to do when the validity period has expired?

When a foreign document expires, you should think about replacing it. You will need to reapply for its registration and collect the necessary documentation. There are no benefits for those who already had a foreign passport. The conditions are general for everyone.

If your previous passport contains many visas, you can ask to leave them by writing an application. The document will be cancelled, declared unusable and returned to the owner. It happens that there are valid visas left in your old passport, but the document is expired. In this case, a new foreign document is issued, and both are taken on the trip. At the border, both the old passport and the new one are provided. In this case, you will be allowed to enter the country.

How to replace?

This year, everyone who encounters this has the right to replace an expired passport. If the validity period expires or has already expired, you must contact the Migration Service by submitting an application for a new document.

If the old passport is still valid, it will be taken away.

The owner has the right to write a statement asking to leave the document, but it will still be canceled by making a note about it in the passport.

If there is more than six months left before the expiration date, it may be difficult to replace your passport. To replace it, it is necessary to provide the FMS employees with compelling reasons.

Where to contact?

To obtain a new foreign document, there are many options for where to turn in this case. Documents are accepted in the following services: the Migration Department, special centers and the Public Services portal (via the Internet). You can contact any of them.

If the applicant applies to the Federal Migration Authority, this can be done at the place of residence or at the place of registration. You must have the required documentation with you. A form is filled out in the Service. In multifunctional centers, the procedure for obtaining a new passport is the same. Registration will be required on the State Services portal. Data from documents is entered into special fields.

Negative decision

The issuance of a new passport may be refused.

This happens in the following cases:

  • the applicant has debts;
  • the documentation package is incomplete;
  • false data was provided;
  • having a criminal record;
  • being under investigation;
  • military service;
  • existence of a court decision that has not been executed.

To avoid refusal, you must carefully prepare for the registration process.

Documentation

To replace an expired foreign passport, the applicant must present the following documentation to the migration department:

  • personal passport;
  • old passport that needs to be replaced;
  • questionnaire;
  • receipt of payment of tax to the power;
  • work book;
  • 2 photos;
  • military ID - for the stronger sex;
  • marriage or divorce certificate (if available).

Documentation must be genuine. If a person provides fictitious documents, he will be refused.

Is it possible to travel if the validity period has expired?

When a foreign passport expires, a replacement document is required. In this case, you don’t need to worry that you won’t be allowed to go abroad or won’t be allowed back home.

If the document holder does not have the opportunity to contact the Migration Department, he has the right to visit countries that allow entry with a passport that is valid for another 6 months.

For example, a person who has at least 4 months left until his passport expires will be allowed into Turkey. You will be allowed into Schengen countries with a document valid for up to 3 months.

Is it possible to have multiple passports?

Since 2015, legislation has made it possible for citizens of the Russian Federation to have 2 foreign passports.

The reasons for this are:

  • the first one ran out of blank pages;
  • the previous passport expires;
  • you urgently need to travel abroad, but your passport is being processed at the Consulate.

Previously, a second passport was issued for the validity period of the first one. Now their actions are not connected with each other. The second passport will be valid for 5 or 10 years and will not be affected by the expiration of the first one.

After changing the surname

After registering a marriage, 3 options are possible - the last names remain the same, the husband takes the wife’s last name and vice versa. In the first case, everything remains unchanged, in the second and third, the passport will have to be changed. The law gives 30 days for this. First you will need to replace your personal passport.

If during your honeymoon your internal passport is still being replaced, then there is no need to change your international passport.

The validity period of a foreign passport after a change of surname has not been established. This passport can be used, but on limited routes. The validity of a foreign passport after a last name change is limited by several factors - the expiration date of the passport and the desire to put a visa stamp in the passport.

To change a foreign passport after changing your last name, you must follow the following sequence:

  1. Replace internal passport.
  2. Submit an application to change your passport.

To replace documents, the following documents are submitted to the Migration Service - an application, photographs, a receipt for payment of a fee, a work book and an old passport. The procedure will take approximately 1 month.

How long is an old-style international passport valid?

An outdated international passport is valid for 5 years. You can apply for it at the Migration Service or on the State Services portal. To obtain it, the applicant must pay a fee of 2,500 rubles. The registration process lasts about 10 days. Created on paper.

Advantages

The main positive point is the short production time of the document. The state duty is less. It is possible to speed up the receipt process at any stage of its registration. To do this, you must submit supporting documents. You can include children in an old-type foreign document.

Is it possible to extend?

When the validity of an outdated type of passport expires, you will need to go through the registration process again.

For this you will need the following documents:

  • passport;
  • work book;
  • pension certificate (for older people);
  • certificate from the military registration and enlistment office;
  • receipt of payment of tax to the power.

This time the series and number of the old foreign document are indicated in the form. It is allowed to submit documentation for a new passport if the old one is still valid.

Biometric document

A new type of foreign document is issued for 10 years. To apply for it, you must contact the Federal Migration Service at your place of residence or registration. Has a built-in chip.

The registration process lasts from 1.5 to two months. The fee for such a passport is higher.

The main advantage of a foreign document in a new format: it has a longer validity period and a longer number of pages.

Is it possible to extend?

There is such a possibility. To do this, a questionnaire and documentation are provided to one of the services. The list of documents is the same.

To obtain a new foreign document, you must go through a number of time-consuming procedures. The Migration Service receives applicants several times a week, which is extremely inconvenient. It is now possible to renew your passport online. The service is free, the document is prepared quickly.

The design scheme is simple:

  1. Register on the appropriate website and create a personal account.
  2. Fill out the form - indicate personal data, insurance certificate number and pension number (for pensioners).
  3. Submitting an application for consideration.
  4. After this you will need to monitor the status. If “accepted” appears, you must appear at the specified address with documentation. When the status changes to “invitation”, this means that the document is ready and can be picked up.

As you can see, any foreign passport has its expiration date. After its expiration, you must go through the process of issuing a new document again. To do this, the applicant must contact the Migration Department with an application form and the required documentation.

You can also renew your passport online – this option is more convenient and faster. If the applicant is a minor, he does not have the right to apply for a document on his own. This is done either by parents or legal representatives. To do this, you must provide supporting documents. For example, a birth certificate or a certificate of guardianship.
