Is it possible to fly abroad with an old passport after the wedding?

Situations often occur when a girl got married today, changed her last name, and a few days later has a honeymoon abroad, and she has old domestic and foreign passports in her hands, and then the question arises: is it possible to fly abroad with an old passport after the wedding? By law, you are required to change your internal passport in connection with the change of surname and, accordingly, you will have to change your international passport, because the information will not match. Please note that when you go abroad, only your foreign passport is required. Is it possible to fly with an international passport with an old last name and not worry?

Traveling after the wedding with an old document

By law, when you change your last name, you are required to change your civil identity card. But when going abroad, you only need a foreign passport; no one will ask for a Russian one, the main thing is that the personal data in the foreign passport coincides with those indicated on the air ticket.

After changing your last name, you must change the document within 30 days; if you are late, you will be fined. The international passport is immediately changed after you receive a Russian one with a changed surname.

If you replaced your Russian document, but did not change your foreign one, you can still fly with your old passport when changing your last name to countries where there is a visa-free regime. No one will ask you for a general passport. And if you are going on a trip where a visa is required, then it will be impossible to fly abroad with a passport in your maiden name. When applying for a visa, you must submit the following passports:

  • Russian;
  • overseas.

Personal data must match in both documents. Therefore, it is urgent to carry out an exchange. You can also contact the carrier. There are carriers that allow you to purchase air tickets using a passport with your maiden name, and depart with a new one. Then you will need the following documents:

  • Marriage certificate;
  • new passport;
  • old passport used to issue the ticket;
  • Russian passport, where it is noted that a foreign passport was previously issued.

If you are flying from abroad, then these documents must be translated into English and certified by a notary. All of the above is possible and practiced, but we should not forget about the legislation, which states that if personal data is changed, a foreign passport and a regular passport become invalid.

Passport exchange

The exchange of a passport for flying abroad occurs:

  • when information changes;
  • when errors are detected;
  • expired document;
  • if the document is unsuitable for further use.

You must exchange your passport within one month from the moment the listed errors are discovered. Also, the international passport must be exchanged for departure abroad if there has been a change in the last name, first name, and patronymic. That is, if a girl changes her last name, then the passport immediately becomes invalid. It is recommended not to change your last name at the time of marriage; you can do this after your honeymoon. Because if the data quickly reaches the border guards, problems may arise with the old passport and the newlyweds will not be able to fly away.

As already mentioned, the moment the surname is changed, the international passport immediately becomes invalid, but information about this is not always promptly submitted to the border service. Therefore, if you want to go on a honeymoon and not waste time waiting to receive new documents, you can take a risk, since there are often no problems when going through passport control. But, if you suddenly lose your passport abroad, you will have problems with the police due to the discrepancy between the names from the old passport and the new Russian one.
